Question by Mom to Leah and Adam: breastfeeding and extremely congested-what’s safe to take?
I am nursing my 5 week old and am really congested and have a pretty wicked sinus headache. I’d like to get some relief before it turns into a sinus infection, but I don’t want to take anything that will dry up my milk or get the baby cranked up-she seems pretty sensitive to caffeine, etc.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Answer by Ellen Tylenol, motrin and advil are fine. Anything with a decongestant (to dry up your nasal passages) will dry your milk up. And if caffeine bothers the baby, obviously you would not take any of that. Steam will help you feel better.
Most antibiotics are quite safe for you to take, so if you should end up with a sinus infection, don’t be afraid to be treated.
Question by Lynn: Is it safe to leave a sinus infection to resolve itself?
I’m fairly certain I have a sinus infection (acute pain on one side of my nose that is tender to touch, and that is worse when/after I’ve been lying down, and lots of thick, bright green drainage). I’d like to let it just run its course, but only if it’s safe to do so.
Any advice?

Question by James M: is it safe to take Benadryl (severe sinus relief) every night?
Ive been taking Benadryl (2 pills) every night for the past couple of weeks to help me goto sleep (i dont have any severe insomnia or disorders, but im perscribed adderal (2 15mg extended release every day) for ADD and its impossible to goto sleep) and i was wondering what are the dangers in doing this i heard something about dependence but im not sure thats an issue here (due to not developing tolerance)
btw: the chemicals in the brand im taking are (in each pill)
Diphenhydramine HCl 25mg
Acetaminophen 325mg
Phenylephrine HCl 5mg
thanks in advance

Answer by Vincent Evangelista You could definately mess up your liver you take it on a daily bases. You could also become dependent on it, regardless of tolerance. Take it long enough and your body will tell you that you can’t go to sleep without taking the Benadryl.

My sinuses are driving me crazy, and my throat hurts from the nasal drip. The other night I took NyQuil Cold & Sinus and it helped a lot, but the next day I could hardly function. I can’t take Sudafed at night b/c it keeps me up. Benadryl helps the allergies but dries my head out. Vicks is not good for me–the past couple times I used it I ended up with pneumonia!
Any advice specifically for night-time treatment?
Thanks!
