Question by The Rogue Cook: How to get rid of sinus pressure from a cold? PLEASE HELP!?
I came down with a cold last Saturday (my husband had it last week so therefore I got it from him). On Sunday night I ended up in the ER cause I just couldn’t breathe and my husband was VERY concerned about my cough. The ER doctor told me that its just a cold and considering its a virus he couldn’t really give me a prescription. So he told me to try Robitussin & Mucinex. Yesterday I started feeling better but last night it got worse. I ended up staying up half the night (only got about 2 hrs of sleep and I’m very tired today) cause I couldn’t breathe, my ears and my head was throbbing, and my throat was hurting.

This morning I decided to call my doctor and I made an appointment. He checked my ears, nose, throat, etc and he told me the same thing the ER doctor told me, that I just have to wait it out (I guess I was hoping that he could give me something so I could get some sort of relief). But he told me to try Afrin. I tried the Afrin and that has made my symptoms worse (my nose is burning, my eyes are really watery).

I’m just feeling so miserable right now and I’m sooo tired but how am I supposed to sleep when I can’t breath? So my question is what other things can I do to help with all the sinus pressure, ear pain, headache, etc? Every time I blow my nose nothing comes out. I’m prone to nosebleeds so I don’t want to blow too hard and my nose is sooo sore right now.

Here are some things I’ve been doing:
Running the hymidifier
Taking Robitussin, Mucinex, and Tylenol
Rubbing Vicks on my chest, and under my nose (a friend even suggested rubbing some on the bottom of my feet)
I’ve been drinking plenty of liquids
Tried the Afrin (but it just made my symptoms worse)

Does anyone have any helpful ideas or tips?
Thats what I got was the AFRIN pump 12 hr. But I think it made my symptoms worse.

did you try the AFRIN pump mist regular 12 hr?

that’s what i use.. sometimes i gotta blow my nose prior and afterwards.. it helps.. but don’t abuse it.

that’s the only thing that works for me.. take patience and relaxing.. you shake it.. PUMP it prior to insertion and then pump once into each nostril and lay down… watch the flix… drink a glass of water.

and sit it out… if you must later blow the nose.. do so.

(oh, watch the diet.. sinuses don’t like processed foods including dairy)

vicks is JUNK… pills are too long to work.. nose spray! it’s fast… additive and effective.

once the cold’s over.. discard the spray.

Use one single dose of Medorrhinum 1M. Follow it with thuja 30 three doses a day for three days. Follow it with Natrum Mur 30 three doses a day until cure. Medicines should be taken in consultation with a homeopathic doctor.

Question by Pierre: PLEASE Help!!! Sinus Infection!!!?
I am 18 and yesterday I went to the doc and he told me I have a sinus infection. He put me on avelox but I couldn’t tolerate the side effects so I am requesting a new anti biotic. In the mean time, I need relief from the fluid in my middle ear. It is driving me crazy, my ears feel full and they constantly pop. What can I do? Valsava only works for seconds. I also need help removing the thick yellow mucus from my nose. What can I do? Neti pot did remove some, but I can still feel some that isn’t budging. PLEASEEEEEEEEE HELP!

I’m going to assume you’ve tried Mucinex. You could try a saline nasal spray or something like Afrin as a decongestant. The problem is with your Eustation tubes. You need to get them open to relieve the inner ear pressure. Also the tubes that drain your sinuses need a decongestant. Something with pseudoephedrine.
Internal hydration will help thin out the mucous also. Juices, water, etc..
The Valsava maneuver is not a good idea as it might just aggravate an Otitis media.
Hope you feel better soon.

Question by prettyinink: severe sinus headache, please help?
I get frequent sinus headaches in winter and today I have a severe one. I took Severe Tylenol Sinus Headache at 12 pm, it is now 5:25 pm and it has only gotten worse. I have tried steam from the shower and hot towels on my face but no pain relief though I could feel movement in my sinus cavities, as if it loosened up a bit. I have leftover Norco from a hospital visit a month ago, Norco is like Vicodin but contains less tylenol and more hydrocodeine(sp?) Would this relieve the pain of my sinus headache or do nothing? I dont want to take it if it wont help.

Question by Me1984: Sinus infection and allergy problems will never go away, please help?
I have had sinus infection problems and allergy problems for the past two years, and nothing can seem to stop them from coming back and my head is never fully cleared. My ears have been popping for that long too. I’ve been on antibiotics from time to time throughout the infections, but they don’t help. I’ve used Neil med sinus relief bottle, which clears it up some, but doesn’t fully stop. I talked to a pharmacist recently and I am taking Ceteri-D, which helps some, but doesn’t stop the infection. My head has been stuffed up for that long along with the ears popping, and I’ve had trouble hearing because of it. The doctors have helped the best they could, but the pharmacist says I might need to see an allergy specialist. What can the allergy specialist do to fully stop my infection, so my ears will not pop, and I can have a clear head forever? I’ve been to an ears, nose, and throat doctor too because I’ve had ear wax build up problems, but I don’t think that’s why my ears have been popping. Any advice on treatment methods for this continuous infection will be helpful, or what procedures can an allergy specialist do? Thanks in advance.
I remember the infection started a couple years back right before new years. I take medicine to relieve the symptoms, but nothing stops the infection fully. I just don’t want to be on medications for the rest of my life because I have lost some musical ability being stuffy like this.

Ask your doctor about a rare neurological disorder called Hemicrania Continua. Look it up online yourself too to see if it seems to fit.

I had sinus infections constantly for years, and even had 2 sinus surgeries to no avail. Then I developed migraines on top of the constant sinus infections and allergy symptoms. Basically I had a lot of separate yet somehow seemingly connected health problems.

Last year I was finally diagnosed with Hemicrania Continua (in my case, an even more rare dual-sided version), and the diagnosis is spot on for me. All those constant sinus infections and allergy symptoms were suddenly explained to be neurological in nature, which explained why all previous treatments didn’t work. There’s no test to see if you have Hemicrania Continua, just an experienced doctor examining your personal medical history, to see if your symptoms match.

On another note, I also agree going to an allergy specialist, separately, can help too. They can do a very simple allergy test to help determine what allergies you might have. They just put a drop of each allergen on your skin somewhere, usually your forearms or your back, and then poke the skin each drop sits on. Doesn’t hurt at all – the worst it does is cause mild itchiness (but don’t scratch!). You wait something like 20 minutes and if you’re allergic to one of the allergens they used, you will have a small red bump where they pricked you for that one thing. They normally test for a ton of different things at once, so having 20 or more at once is normal. All in all it’s a very simple and easy to go through test done in the doctor’s normal office. So that’s a good way to test if you really have allergies or not, and helps rule things out.

What do you think? Answer below!
