Hi
I have (constantly) a plug of mucus in my sinuses. It smells foul on the occasion that a little falls low enough to be ‘pulled’ down into my mouth. It’s normally an opaque white colour, but I have some kind of upper respiratory infection (sinusitis?) at the moment and I have just pulled down a large clot of it and it is bright orange. Not bloody- I have suffered from nosebleeds in the past and this is not streaked with blood. There are brown ‘flecks’ in it too. My left sinus feels quite clear now! My question is about treatment: I have been given nasal spray for this but I hate the sensation and end up not finishing the course. Is there anything ‘easier’? Also, my son has this foul smell now- I think I have passed it to him via his dummy. He also has an infection at the moment- will his immune system fight it off or is he stuck with this as I seem to be?
Thanks

doobyden – It seems that some factor in your environment or sinuses is causing the lining of your sinuses to secrete a great deal of mucus. Two common causes are sinus infection and allergy with low humidity added on. Try adding moisture by use of a room Humidifier or breathing moistened air several times per day to loosen the mucus. For the possibilities, you might wish to try a decongestant over the counter medicine or plan visit to either your general physician or an ENT (Ear-Nose & Throat physician, also called an otolaryngologist).
