How long does a typical sinus infection usually last and do I need to go to a doctor? I’ve been sick for a week now.

It depends. Sometimes they go away in a few days but if you susceptible to virus infections they can keep coming back.
You should definitely go to the doc if it doesn’t get better soon.

First of all, if it’s bacterial, antibiotics will help. But there’s lots you can do.
Eating the wrong things will fuel the problem. Milk, eggs & dairy products all generate mucus in the body, as do bananas, chocolate, wheat flour and sugar.
A week or so on salads, whole grains, fruits & juices, lots of water, and plainly cooked vegetables will go a long way to helping. Avoid white bread, cakes, etc. and only have tea or coffee if you need it to wake up in the morning. Keep meat to a minimum, if at all, no fizzy or sugary drinks, and no booze.
Sniffing salt water, taking it down the back of your nose, then spitting it out will clean things up.
Every night take a bowl of water as hot as you can stand, and a bowl of iced water. Soak a facecloth in the hot water and lay it over your sinus area (the bit covered by a burglar’s mask); after 10 minutes take it off and put an iced facecloth on for 10 minutes; repeat the cycle three times.
    Hope this helps!
