How can I effectively treat a sinus infection at home? (It is pretty bad, btw). My nose feels like someone is jabbing a knife in the right side up to my eye and across my cheek when I blow it. The pressure is unbearable, and the OTC meds. I am using are not much help. Thank you in advance.

Over the counter sinus/cold tablets are a good idea. Take some additional pain killer like Tylenol or Motrin. Nose drops – decongestants like Nasonex may also help.
Steam inhalation – with or without Vicks will relieve congestion.
If the above suggestions don’t help, you need to take antibiotics, consult your doctor or ENT specialist.

I don’t know if this will fully heal it (if it’s really infected, you might need anti-biotics), but it will definitely help. Sinus irrigation.

    You’ll need:
    - a quart (litre) size jar or other clean container with a lid
    - a good-sized dropper (you can get one from a pharmacy)
    - a quart (litre) of water which can be cooled, boiled water but doesn’t have to be boiled if you don’t want to bother with it
    - a clean bowl (ceral bowl size is fine)
    - an old towel
    - 2 tsp of sea salt or kosher salt (i.e., salt without added things like iodine)
    - 1 tsp of bicarbonate soda (baking soda)

Put the water in the container with the lid. Add the salt and baking soda. Stir with a clean spoon or put the lid on and shake it up until the salt dissolves.

Pour some of the solution into the smaller bowl, and take it and the towel to a sink. Tip your head back and put a dropper full of the solution into one nostril and then the other. It may burn at first, but it really will help clean out the mucus and other stuff. Hold your nose closed and tip your head from side to side. If you know how to close off the back of your throat like a swimmer, do that, otherwise the solution is going to run into your throat, in which case just spit it out (it doesn’t taste nice, but it won’t hurt you). Do a two or three droppers in each nostril, letting the solution go into the sink by spitting or blowing it through your nose. The towel is because it’s kinda messy and you’ll probably need to wipe your face.

Do this procedure a couple times a day. You can do it as often as you wish. It’s not a very pleasant thing to do, but it absolutely and definitely works to help clean out your sinuses and promote healing, and afterward, your sinuses feel fanstastic. I’ve got chronic sinusitis and learning about this from my doctor has been a lifesafer for me.

Keep the lid on the big container of solution when it’s not in use. Note that you can buy pre-made saline solution in a pharmacy, but it’s quite expensive compared to just making it yourself, and it comes in a teeny little bottle. This is a lot more economical and the addition of the bicarbonate is good for the nasal tissues.

One of the best home remedies for clearing sinus’s is the steam and mentalatum mix. If you don’t have a humidifier, you can boil a pan of water on the stove and mix some vix or mentolatum in it, let it come to a boil and then turn off the heat and drape a towel over you head and over the steam. breath it in through your nose. It may be hard to breath it in, but just keep doing it. get air if you have to from out side the towel. but then do it again under the towel and breath in the steam. this will clear most sinus and the infection. Don’t be surpised if when you blow your nose that a whole bunch of crap come out of it.

My husband uses this to keep from getting bronchitis, and I use to to cure sinus infections. THere are many kinds of bacteria that live in the sinuses, and this gets rid of all the bad ones!.This is the only thing that really helped me — my Dr. told me about a sinus wash that will kill bacteria.
    you need

    distilled water
    sea salt
liquid chlorophyll and colloidal silver from the health food store.
in a glass mix 1/4 cup water with a pinch of salt and heat to body temperature.
add 5 drops each silver and chlorophyll and mix.
using a large dropper (like one used for infant medication) drop 2 full droppersfull into one side of the nose while laying down.
Turn the head and let it drain out the other nostril. Be sure to have paper towels handy.
The silver kills the bacteria and there are several hundred kind that can live in the sinus cavities and anti biotics don’t get rid of them all.
Do this twice a day for a week, mixing up the mixture fresh each time.
Then do it once a week for maintenance.
There is nothing in this that will hurt you, and it cured me.
I do not have to take claritin, or antibiotics anymore.
    best wishes
